Some of my followers may know that before moving to Japan I lived in the Republic of Georgia (the post-Soviet nation) for two years. It is there that I was accepted into an LGBT community for the first time in my life. I was horrified earlier to find out that my friends, when attempting to hold a rally for IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia), were literally chased by an angry mob of people, a mob that was encouraged by officials of the Eastern Orthodox Church. My ex, who was among them, told me how terrifying it was to be chased by thousands (she said 100,000, but I do not know for sure) of people, and people were chanting about killing them and their mothers. I am still trying I find out if anyone I know was hurt—or worse—but from what I know some people were beaten.

Fortunately, the police worked really hard to protect them and get them out of the city center on buses, but even after that they were chased by cars full of people throwing things, and the buses were damaged.

I am posting this because I want to make sure that this story isn’t lost, that my community in Georgia knows that it has support from around the world. So many of the people in that community do important work around the country, region and world, yet most people do not even know their country exists. And it isn’t only Georgia, but the whole region. I have known friends from Armenia who have had to flee for their lives to other countries, who have had their businesses burned down, who have been constantly harassed by gangs but cannot go to the police. But noisy hears about those things.

These things happen all over the world but I do not want to see any such event overlooked. If anyone can help spread the word, I would appreciate it.

Edit: I have gotten word that nobody has been seriously injured or killed. Never expected to say this, but thank goodness for the police in Tbilisi. Or, at least, thank goodness they did their jobs this time around!

Update: /Another/ one of my friends who was part of the group attacked (and who is one of the ones who does a lot of work internationally) released a long account of what happened, and she says that she doesn`t feel like they received strong enough support form the police quickly enough. She says they didn`t really act until some UN representatives showed up. She says that their escape happened just in time, and they strongly believe that people may have been killed had there been anymore delay.

Despite the fact that there was, obviously, a huge number of people who were a part of the attack, a lot of the population is outraged and disgusted with the fact that this happened, which is giving a lot of people hope on progress being made.

Ahaha, This is pretty personal I guess, but I don’t mind putting it up here…sorry if some of it is hard to read… i have terrible writing ugh v/w/v;;;

I probably stated this a few times on my personal blog, but our genitals really determine so much for us that it’s easy to see why it’s so difficult for non binary people to make it far.

What’s funny though, is my mom saw me drawing the second image, and she said the last one’s not me. What’s great about that is how ironic it was for her to say that. It’s basically what I’m talking about, how people assume you’re this or that because you have these sorts of chromosomes and all that shit. Great, I wasn’t blessed with a dick, but that’s not what makes me me. I just… hm…

I’m not sure what to say honestly, I had so many words and they’re kinda gone now. But this was something I did today,and it can be something for those out there that don’t fit in the binary, for the trans people who didn’t always know. Sometimes I wish I did, but there’s no amount of memory or evidence to say that I didn’t know. It was there, just covered up in dresses and dolls. You don’t need all kinds of proof to say you really are trans.

Where I work, one of our priorities when doing character customization is to give the player one expectation for a clothing item, and then meet that expectation regardless of the sex of the avatar. Because of this, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about gender and gender expression, and the gender coding in clothing and motifs. We like to design things that only need small tweaks to look appealing on different bodies, and we also like to let the player determine how masculine or feminine they want their avatar to look. From many, many months of doing this work and decades of gaming between us, it has come to our attention that not every character customization system does this.

Aion does not do this, and is therefore my guinea pig for this exercise. Aion has some very nice, rich, tasty costume designs, (and it’s up to you whether it’s good or bad that they do this because I’m not casting judgement in this post) but they basically come up with two completely different designs per single “outfit.” The female version is often extremely feminine, and the male version is generally more masculine. That’s par for the course for Korean MMOs, but the part that drives me up the wall is that entire motifs and design elements are gutted from one or the other to achieve this type of gendering. So much good design,withheld from a costume for such a flimsy reason.

What I’ve done here for this exercise is to take every element from the “base” costume and transpose it onto the other, while attempting to preserve the original feminine/masculine gender expression that Aion loves so well. One of the original costumes usually emerges as the more gender coded of the two, but therein lies the very fun challenge: make lacy frou-frou masculine enough for your typical male player not to immediately sell the costume on the game market.

Feel free to do this exercise yourself if you like!
